Synopsis – Ponniyin Selvan: Part I (Son of Ponni {in english}) aka PS-I, this is an upcoming Indian Telugu language film directed by Mani Ratnam and written by Ratnam along with B. Jayamohan (dialogue by), Kalki Krishnamoorthy, and Elango Kumaravel (screenplay), this film is co produced by Mani Ratnam under his production house named Madras Talkies and Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner of Lyca Productions.
This movie is the first cinematic part of Ponniyin Selvan, a novel written by Kalki Krishnamoorthy in 1955; its second part will be available soon. The lead starcast of this movie are Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachachan, Trisha, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu and Ashwin Kakumanu. Other stars who are roped in this movie are R. Sarathkumar, R. Parthiban, Prabhu, Prakash Raj and Rahman in the supporting roles. Music in this movie is composed by A. R. Rahman cinematography and editing done by Ravi Varman, and A. Sreekar Prasad respectively and production design done by Thota Tharani.
Because this novel gained so much popularity, the film production for this movie was planned by established actors and directors from the film fraternity. But this novel did not materialize due to many reasons like, Mani Ratnan tried to adapt the novel (after a failed attempt by M.G. Ramchandran in the late 1950s) in the mid 1990s and early 2010s but was unsuccessful. This film is the Dream Project for Ratnam, he revived the adaptation in Jan 2019 under the banner of Lyca Productions.
After the several changes in the cast and crew this film was brought to the production stage again in mid- December and this film was completed shooting within September 2021 with the mishappenings of production being halted twice due to Covid pandemic. This film is scheduled to be released on 30th September 2022. This film was shot at different places in India, with some shots being completed in Thailand.
