Synopsis – King Richard is an American biographical film based on sports drama. This film was released on 2nd September 2021 (Telluride) and 19th November 2021 (United States). Directed and written by Reinaldo Marcus Green, and Zach Baylin and produced by Tim White, Trevor White, and Will Smith under the production house Westbrook Studios, Star Thrower Entertainment, and Keepin’ It Reel. It stars Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal. This film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The music in this film is composed by Kris Bowers while the cinematography and editing is handled by Robert Elswit, and Pamela Martin respectively. This film premiered on the occasion of 48th Telluride Film Festival which was held on 2nd September 2021. Theatrical release was scheduled for 19th November 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures and on the HBO Max streaming service.

The story of this film is based on Richard Williams who lives in Compton, California with his wife Brandy Williams. Richard lives with his wife, three step daughters and his two daughters Venus and Serena. Richard aspired to turn Venus and Serena into professional tennis players. Richard has created the plan for success even before the birth of Venus and Serena. Richard and Brandy work as a Security Guard and a Nurse respectively and coach Venus and Serena on a daily basis.

This film was made with a budget of $50 Million Dollars and with the loss of 12 Million Dollars the collection of this movie is almost $38 Million Dollars. The screenplay was good but this film could not make more business but this film achieved following awards and recognitions like – 

  • It was named one of the best films of 2021 by American Film Institute and the National Board of Review.
  • Will Smith Awarded as Best Actor for this movie and Ellis as Best Supporting Actress
  • Six Nominations at the 94th Academy Awards (including Best Pictures).
  • Seven Nominations at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards (including Outstanding Motion Picture)
  • Six Nominations at the 27th Critics’ Choice Awards (including Best Picture).
  • Four Nominations at the 79th Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Drama).

For the amazing performance in this film Smith was awarded multiple titles like the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award.
